Custom Fields

If you need to capture some non-standard piece of information for your company, you can add your own custom fields. These fields can be edited in your pages and included in your reports and emails.

For example, let's say you want to record the 'Favorite Color' for all of your Prospects in the Demographic Information section. You would:

  1. Log in as the system administrator.
  2. Go to Setup | Create | Objects and click on Prospect.
  3. Scroll down to Custom Fields & Relationships and click New.
  4. Under data type select Text and click Next.
  5. In Field Label type 'Favorite Color'. In Length type 255. Click Next.
  6. On the permissions page check all the boxes under Visible and click Next.
  7. Click Save.
  8. In the Field Sets section, find Prospect - Demographic Information and click Edit.
  9. Drag the field down to the In the Field Set region.
  10. Click Save.
  11. Click the + tab to open the All Tabs page and then click Settings.
  12. Click the All Tasks sub-tab.
  13. Click Run System Integrity Check and wait for it to finish. This step is EXTREMELY important! If not done, the Prospect page will throw an error when it is accessed.

Custom Page Sections

To help group your custom fields on a page, you can create custom sections. To do so, make a new field set and make sure the API name of the field set starts with the word 'Section'. The fields in the field set will be displayed in a new section at the bottom of the object's detail page. The field set label will become the section title. If you have more than one custom section, they are displayed in alphabetical order by API name.

For example, you can create a new field set with a label 'Cats' and an API name of 'Section_Cats' on the Prospect object. This will create an additional section titled 'Cats' at the bottom of the Prospect detail pages. If you wanted to make another section called 'Ants' but have it display AFTER cats, you could name the 'Ants' section 'SectionB_Ants' and rename the 'Cats' section to 'SectionA_Cats'.
